Radio is one medium that has been there for years and has constantly evolved ever since. Music was and still is the major broadcast of any radio station. Every radio station has their individual format and also professional jockey to stream out music for the masses. Radio disc jockeys are employed in various radio stations to fit into the job of coordinating and undertaking research for broadcasting a particular program. To become a radio disc jockey one has to have certain qualifications and requirements.

A radio disc jockey or an RJ has the responsibility to provide entertainment and information related to music to the audience via a radio broadcast. Some radio disc jockeys are also responsible for providing reports on general news, sports and weather report, while playing music and broadcasting information. This is different from journalism, as the jockey also aids in promotion of sales, giveaways etc.

The most important skill that an aspiring radio disc jockey must have is communication. He or she has to be a communication expert and must be able to engage the interest of the listeners. Most of the RJs should have a good voice quality that is soothing along with being able to speak in a clear diction that is complete with energy with distinct pronunciation. This might not be a necessity but passion in the field of music would enable you to score in this field as an RJ. Having knowledge about musical genres that a particular station plays may be an added advantage. As a radio disc jockey, you must be up to date with the artists, their music and albums. This is because a music lover would be able to spot whether the presenter is also a music enthusiast or at least has musical knowledge. So, you have to stay upbeat.

Radio disc jockeys also have to be quick in their thinking and be witty in their approach. They must possess the ability to broadcast even when there are technical difficulties. Alongside this, the radio jockey must be able to continue conversations flawlessly, with pop singers and artists coming to the show. Make sure that you are professionally and systematically skilled.

Applicants must at least have a four-year degree or a bachelor's degree in media production, journalism or communication. This might not be mandatory but may work as an added advantage as an aspiring RJ to deal with the competition. Short term radio jockey certification courses are also available.

An RJ must work hard and gain experience before taking up a lucrative opportunity. Most of the time you would have to work as a producer, and get some internship before moving on to become a radio disc jockey. Most of the radio disc jockeys earn around $32 per hour or $40,000 a year.

This is a field with stiff competition. So, it is good that an applicant works their way up starting from the small stations or acquires an internship before bagging a big offer.
